Pakse – Between the River and the Highlands
Founded in the early 20th century, Pakse is now the principal city of southern Laos. Located at the confluence of the Mekong and Sedone rivers, it enjoys a strategic setting between the fertile river plains and the rolling highlands of the Bolaven Plateau.
The town retains a relaxed atmosphere, where bustling local markets, Buddhist temples and lively neighbourhoods coexist in harmony. More than just a stopover, Pakse is the gateway to the spectacular natural landscapes and rich rural cultures of southern Laos.
Overlooking the town from a hilltop, Wat Phou Salao offers sweeping views across the Mekong River. Its magnificent golden Buddha statue provides a peaceful setting to admire the surrounding rivers and landscapes.
From Pakse, scenic roads lead to the Bolaven Plateau, renowned for its coffee plantations, spectacular waterfalls and ethnic minority villages. Across these volcanic highlands, lush forests, fertile farmland and traditional communities create some of southern Laos’s most captivating scenery.
Pakse is also the main gateway to Si Phan Don, the 4,000 Islands of the Mekong, where the river branches into countless peaceful islets in the heart of southern Laos.
