Located in the far north of Laos, Huay Xai lies on the banks of the Mekong River, directly opposite the Thai town of Chiang Khong. This small border town is one of the main gateways into Laos for travelers arriving from Thailand.

It is also the starting point for one of the country’s most iconic river journeys along the Mekong, particularly toward Luang Prabang.

Huay Xai is easily accessible from Chiang Khong in Thailand, located just across the Mekong River.

Travelers usually cross the river via the Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge before continuing their journey into Laos.
From Huay Xai, you can travel to Luang Prabang by boat along the Mekong or by road through the mountains of northern Laos.
